Why should I chose Hurtigruten for an Alaska cruise?

Hurtigruten has a solid reputation and has been around for more than 125 years. The company started with a steam ship service that provided a link to northern and southern Norway. They’ve been pushing boundaries since 1893. Today, in addition to Norway, they lead eco-friendly expeditions in Alaska, Greenland, Svalbard, Arctic Canada, Iceland, South America, Caribbean, Russia, Northwest Passage and the Seventh Continent of Antarctica.
What sets them apart from other cruise lines is their focus on the environment and education. When you take an Alaska cruise with Hurtigruten, you embark on a mission of learning and personal growth.

Hurtigruten is committed to learning

Each expedition team at Hurtigruten is made up of highly knowledgeable and experienced people who take the time to share what they know with the passengers. Every cruise ship has a Science Centre where passengers can mingle with staff and crew and learn more about the places they are visiting. The aim is for guests to not only enjoy their surroundings, but also to understand the nature, wildlife, culture and history of their destinations. They even have a Young Explorers’ Programme available for youth aged 6-12 years of age.

They even make their photos/videos available online in an Expedition Log. So, if photography is not your forte, you will still have amazing memories of your Alaska cruise to look back on for years to come.

What can I expect aboard the Alaska cruise ship?

All of Hurtigruten’s Alaska cruise expeditions are aboard the MS Roald Amundsen. It is named after the first person who crossed the Antarctica to reach the South Pole. The ship was introduced to the fleet in 2019. With a passenger capacity of 500, it is one of Hurtigruten’s largest vessels. What makes it really stand out, though, is its environmentally sustainable technology.

Sailing with electric propulsion, the MS Roald Amundsen is able to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%. It’s the first of several hybrid ships that Hurtigruten plans to add to its fleet in the future as a means of leading the way in environmental sustainability.
