Travelling to Tahiti is all that you have dreamt of, and more.
Tahiti must be one of the most photographed travel destinations in the world. Its white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, lush jungle and unique culture really make it like no other destination.
Before you visit, it’s nice to get some clarity around the geography of this destination. Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, which is a group of 118 islands and atolls, 67 of which are inhabited. The islands are divided up into five groups: the Society Island archipelago, the Tuamotu Archipelago; the Gambier Islands; the Marquesas Islands; and the Austral Islands. Tahiti is located within the Society Islands archipelago, and is home to the capital city of Pape’ete. It’s one of the most popular destinations in French Polynesia due to its international airport, tourism efforts and diverse offerings.
For accommodation and flights to Tahiti, we suggest booking as much in advance as possible. This beautiful destination is a sought after place and demand can exceed supply if left last minute. Once you arrive in Tahiti, you can island hop around French Polynesia if you choose. We suggest booking inter-islands flights in advance, as it will save you time and money; be sure to talk to your travel specialist pre-travel if island hopping is on your must-do list.
Time of year is also something to consider pre-travel. Tahiti has a wet season that lasts from November to April. If possible, we would suggest that you avoid this time of year to get the most out of your vacation. If whale watching is on your top to-do list, visit Tahiti between August to October for the best chance of sightings.
Tahiti, and all of French Polynesia, has a unique culture. In addition to the people being extremely warm and friendly, the locals can teach you a lot about their local traditions. There are also cultural day trips where you can take your learning to the next level by visiting significant sights and learning from local storytellers.
In addition to history, food is a big part of the Polynesian culture. Tropical fruit and fresh seafood is prepared to perfection in Tahiti, be sure to try whatever is fresh, including our favorite: Poisson Cru, which is a tangy, sweet ceviche dish.
Accommodation on the island of Tahiti is as diverse as the island’s offerings. If you have been dreaming about an overwater bungalow, this is the place to do it. However, be aware that overwater bungalows are considerably more expensive than resort rooms. They do offer a completely unforgettable experience, but we always suggest mixing up your accommodation over the course of your holiday to get a feel for the different offerings. Name brand resort chains are a popular and great choice in Tahiti. Brands like Intercontinental, Four Seasons, St.Regis and Sofitel have resorts on multiple French Polynesian islands and often offer discounts to travellers staying at more than one of their properties (another bonus to booking in advance).
Often when travellers think of Tahiti, they assume it’s only for couples, and while couples will have an amazing time relaxing or exploring Tahiti, so will families. The island has lots to do, including snorkelling, scuba diving, ATVing, hiking, safari jeep tours, surfing, boating, mountain biking, surfing, history tours and more! It’s a different, more authentic type of vacation that will bring your family closer together through adventure and appreciation for the beautiful outdoors.
